I Bonds: Higher Interest, Safe as CDs and Money Market Funds

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Tim Olson By this stage of your life, you have all heard the sage advice to save money for an emergency fund. Most financial articles and planners advocate keeping between six to twelve months of after-tax income in a money market or similar cash equivalent account. Emergency money provides a safety cushion to absorb the unexpected surprises of life. Preservation and liquidity of these funds are of paramount importance. You must be able to access your money immediately when needed. But liquidity and preservation requires purchasing low risk investmentsextremely low risk. This translates to accepting low returnsextremely low returns. In today’s economy, keeping cash in money market funds will yield a paltry 1.5%. Checking and savings accounts barely return half that, or 0.75%. Clearly returns on cash savings are limited. A sudden return of inflation to our economy and your emergency stash could actually lose value. What’s a prudent investor to do? Think-outside-the-box as platitudes goor metaphorically, climb the ladder to success. Bond ladders” describe the purchase of multiple bonds with staggered maturities. This purchase strategy minimizes interest rate risk and smoothes cash flow. But laddering can be used for more than just controlling interest rate risk. Savvy investors use bond ladders to substantially increase the liquidity of higher yielding investments. I-Bonds are a perfect vehicle for such a strategy. I-Bonds are a relatively new savings bond issued and backed by the U.S. Treasury. Your money is 100% safe and currently earns 3.39% (twice the rate of six month CDs)! But here’s the catch: I-Bonds can not be sold for one full year after purchase. Investing your entire emergency fund would tie up your money for an entire year. Not exactly the liquidity you need. This is where laddering can help. Invest just 10% of your money in I-Bonds. This still leaves 90% of your money immediately available from a savings or money market account. One year from now, invest another 10% in I-Bonds. This leaves just 80% in your savings account. But wait. Your first I-Bond is now one year old and can be cashed at any time. You still have immediate access to 90% of your cash in any time of need. Once each year, invest just 10% of your money in I-Bonds without ever losing immediate liquidity of your emergency funds. All while earning a substantially larger rate of return, protected against inflation, and guaranteed by the U.S. government. Sidebar Article: WHAT ARE I-Bonds? I-Bonds are a new liquid savings bond backed by the U.S. Government. While you own them, they earn interest and protect your savings from inflation. I-Bonds can be purchased and sold online at the US Treasury’s website, Treasury Direct. www.SavingsBonds.gov There are never any transaction or processing fees from Treasury Direct and you can easily and securely transfer funds from your bank account for the purchase of any bond. I-Bonds can be sold anytime after 12 months. You receive the original purchase price plus interest earnings. I-Bonds sold within the first five years will forfeit three months interest. Dancing the Weight Away

Monday, May 26th, 2008

By Michael Callen Many years ago, (about twenty, I suppose) I recall watching a television show on PBS that focused on the health and agility of male ballet dancers. I have to be honest, I’m not a big fan of ballet and I know very little about it, but I do recall one aspect of the program that made a big impression. The producer of the show took a few of these men to a local gymnasium and had them play basketball. It was incredible to watch these men — who were less than six feet tall — gracefully floating through the air, slam-dunking the ball into the hoop without the appearance of effort. It’s ironic that the average Neanderthal would view these experts of their craft as weak — even frail — when the exact opposite is so clearly true. The study of ballet (and practice of it, too, of course) helps a person to maximize their strength and flexibility. So much so that these athletes gain abilities that rival professional athletes in distinctly different arenas. That may not sound so incredible, but think about the flip-side… Imagine your proto-typical power forward from basketball, linebacker from American football, or soccer goalie donning a pair of tights and attempting to emulate a ballet dancer. Quite an image, huh? Now I’m not suggesting that each one of us fighting the Battle of the Bulge should take up ballet, I’m certainly not going to do so, myself, however, dance — as an exercise — has hit the press of late, and in a big way. Foxnews.com recently reported a story (from Associated Press) that not only suggests that people consider dance as an alternative to “traditional excercise”, but they also have interviewed several people who have benefited in a big way. According to exercise physiologist Cedric Bryant, dance as a form of exercise is a trend that has gained a great deal of momentum. Mr. Bryant, also a vice president with the American Council on Exercise, explains that people are looking for a “more engaging alternative to the traditional workout.” Bryant points out that dancing provides a workout for the whole body, is low impact and easy on the joints. Add to that the music of your choice and your favorite partner, and you’re really starting to move. Jerry Nash, age 46, was carrying 260 pounds on his 6′ 1″ frame. The stress of the weight precluded jogging, because of his knees. So Mr. Nash signed up for a conditioning and stretching class at “Dance 101″ in Atlanta, Georgia. He moved on to several different styles of dance classes and one year later has lost an incredible 55 pounds. As an added benefit, a recent check of his blood pressure came in at a healthy 110 over 60. Dance is a great weapon to keep in your arsenal as you wage war on unwanted fat. You can dance in the privacy of your own home at any time, day or night. The ability to be flexible with scheduling is very important as we try to establish a new habit. Another benefit is that you can partner up with someone whose company you enjoy. Exercising with someone adds a degree of accountability that helps any regimen to be a success. New York dance therapist Jane Wilson Cathcart, LMSW, ADTR, CMA, has some suggestions that can make dance more comfortable for a beginner: Look for a good teacher who emphasizes what you can do, not your limits. Don’t be a perfectionist about it. Don’t worry about your size. Dance is for everyone. Get into the music, as well as the movement. Remember, the basic key to losing weight or losing fat is that you simply need to burn more calories that you consume. This is a fantastic way to fuse the music that you love with the exercise that you need. Dust off those old Bee Gee’s albums and give a new meaning to “Stayin’ Alive”! What Goes Into Wedding Preparation From Your DJ?

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

By Rob Alberti Exactly what should your disc jockey be doing in the weeks/months prior to your wedding? If you think that they just show up at your reception and are ready to go - you’ve missed out on what they’ve been doing to prepare. Typically, your DJ will meet you during the sales stage of things - you get to know him, they get to know what you are looking for. Once you’ve decided that they are the right DJ for you, then the work starts. Your DJ would lock in your date and start working on preparation. About 2 months prior to your wedding, they would meet you again and start going over details with you. If your DJ wants to meet only a week or so ahead of your wedding - just say no. You should expect more from them. This is what a professional DJ does in the months prior to your event: 1. They have your itinerary / wedding party names to review and make sure there are no issues and that transitions from one thing to a next have a natural flow to them. 2. They would be communicating with you regarding any last minute changes you might have, sometimes talking to the banquet facility or your photographer if questions arise or to discuss setup requirements. 3. They would review your music requests and make sure they have all your key songs. Many DJs will prepare a working CD with all your selected songs on it to even further make sure there are no issues on the day of your wedding. 4. Many DJs now will work on music programming on their laptop - they will prepare just the right mix of music for social hour and dinner ahead of time. For your dance selections, they may prepare a play list so all the songs you want are easily accessible and for quick reference. 5. They will prepare their equipment and load up just the right pieces for your event and bring sufficient backup in case of emergency. A typical wedding might require about 5-10 hours of preparation event BEFORE the day of your wedding. Ask your potential DJ how much time they invest in preparation for your event - you might be amazed at the differences between lesser DJs and true professionals. Graduating from University

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joseph_Kenny]Joseph Kenny After all the late night partying of university, what is the one major hang over that most students are complaining about when its all over and theyve graduated? The answer is student debt. Student debt levels continue to rise every year as banks and other lenders throw more and more credit their way while they are still studying. It seems as if the banks have plenty of faith in graduates being able to pay back the loans, and most graduates would confirm this. What is causing graduates stress is not toe overall levels of debt they have racked up while studying, which still averages under 15,000, but the fact that they have to pay such a high proportion of their new wages in debt servicing. Graduation and the start of your working life are supposed to be a time of relative prosperity and the privations and economies of the student years should finally be over. However, more and more graduates are reporting that they have to pay so much in loan repayments that they are just as badly off as when they are students. For example, a huge proportion of student debt is made up of government sponsored student loans, which come from the Student Loan Company. The repayment rules for these loans are quite lenient. Beginning in the April after you graduate, 9% of all your earnings above 15,000 will be taken to repay the loans. The interest is also quite preferable. While this seems to be a fairly gentle way of repaying student loans, it should be remembered that these not the only debts that students have. Student overdrafts of up to 2,000, which are interest free, are now fairly standard practice. Almost every student will be given one when they open a student bank account and its rare to find a student who hasnt spent it all. Then there are credit cards and store cards, which are increasingly easy to get your hands on. Add to this the expenses of moving home when you graduate, starting a new job, getting a new place to live, and its no wonder that most graduates feel every bit as financially constrained as when they were still studying. There are graduate loans available however which can be used to ease your way into working life. These offer postponed repayment terms so you have some time before you have to start repaying them all. The interest rates are generally pretty favourable and combined with the repayment holiday, which might be up to two years from graduation, you can really ease your way into working life. Laughter, Why It’s so Good for You

Friday, May 9th, 2008

By Dianne Wandruff For hundreds of years, we’ve known that ‘Laughter is the best medicine’. Laughter makes you feel good for a reason. The physiological effects on your body are amazing. For example: Laughter reduces levels of certain stress hormones. It provides a safety valve that shuts off the flow of stress hormones and the fight-or-flight compounds that come into action in times of trouble, or hostility or rage. Laughter boosts the immune system because when you’re in a state of mirth, natural killer cells that destroy tumors and viruses increase. It basically brings balance to all the components of the immune system. Laughter can be a total body workout! Do you often feel exhausted after a bout of contagious giggling? This is because you have just had an aerobic workout. Blood pressure is lowered and there is an increase in vascular blood flow, and an increase in oxygenation of the blood. Oxygenation of the blood enables the body to carry on healing activities for itself. There also has been some belief that laughter prevents some life-threatening diseases such as heart disease. That’s because anger and fear (two emotions that often lead to heart attack) are completely eliminated while you are laughing. Laughing invokes happiness and joy. Instead of being gloomy and frustrated because there is no perceived solution, laughing lifts you up out of your pool of problems and places you on solid ground where you can gain some new insights. Under conditions of happiness it is much easier to think creatively around a problem than when your mind is filled with thoughts of helplessness or worthlessness. Shared laughter promotes bonding and unity within a group. This is particularly evident when there are a few people involved in a project. People feel more welcome and free to offer suggestions and think out loud. They’re not afraid of being put down, so will risk sharing their opinion. Laughter also opens the door to more real and risky communication. Sometimes people are feeling scared or overwhelmed by conditions, but don’t know how to express it. If a humorous comment is made that expresses the concerns in an exaggerated way, people will laugh. This then enables them to talk about the uncomfortable issues or concerns. By laughing, an entry is made for talk about the subject. This applies just as well in a family setting. Humor is hazardous to your illness and so are some other things! There are several things you can do to boost your enjoyment of life and to open the way for a day of laughter…and then more days of laughter. I think in terms of Enjoying Health, and to me, this means total health: body, soul, and spirit. I’d like to share from my own personal experience what my husband and I do to build our physical and emotional health and so enjoy life more fully. We’ve changed our diet away from the traditional American diet that includes white flour breads and sugary drinks and desserts; grocery store meats that are basically polluted; and packaged foods. We try to eat natural, vibrant foods; drink more water than any other liquid; use supplements on a daily basis; and use (http://www.essentialimmunehealth.com/newsletters/July2004.html) the Q2 Energy Spa every other day, practically religiously. We work hard out of doors, getting plenty of fresh air and sunshine; and we pray to God with thankfulness, asking for His guidance and blessings too. We’re Baby Boomers that were going downhill in bodily health, but somehow we’ve made a turnaround and our aging process has not only been slowed down, but it has been reversed! We’re getting rid of disease symptoms right and left. Tell every Baby Boomer you know that they can make a difference in their health. Refer them to my website: http://www.essentialimmunehealth.com! Most of us lack energy or have multiple diseases or are (http://essentialimmunehealth.com/journals/NaturalAntidepressants.html) depressed. Sickness and disease and depression are on the rampage in our culture because of the way we have treated ourselves. I want you to know you can regain your health and I want you to begin today TO STOP DOING WHAT’S HURTING YOU AND START DOING SOME THINGS THAT ARE GOOD FOR YOU. This article is excerpted from my October 2004 newsletter from my website called ENJOYING HEALTH. To read more specifically what my recommendations are, please refer to my October newsletter (http://www.essentialimmunehealth.com/newsletters/October2004.html). You can grow old gracefully, happily, finding reasons to laugh every day… My skin is being rejuvenated and so is that of my husband Dave (i.e. moles and liver spots and bumps and skin tags are going away)… And when the healing process that begins from within begins to show on the outside of your body, you KNOW you’ve been successful in regenerating good health. That’s something to laugh about. ENJOYING HEALTH makes each day more pleasurable. About The Author Reverse the desperate condition called AGING. You can affect your health! Dowsing Dowser Divining Radiesthesia - Using of Pendulum and Biotensor

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

By Roger Moretto Dowsing - Divining is a word, that was coined in 1920 by the French abbot Bouly and it comes from the Latin word Radius (ray) and from the Greek word Aisthesis (sensation). The diviner is the person, who is able to sense, through a pendulum, biotensor or dowsing rod, the vibrations of impulses and the radiations emitted from things, people, animals, grounds, and so onIn ancient times the word Dowsing was used just for the search of springs of water or metals as gold. Then the man realised that the radiations were emitted, not only by water and metals, but also by each form of life. Then people realised that, this resonance between the inorganic material and the mind of man, could have been extensible to any field. Here the reason for choosing the word Divining as definition to indicate the study of the waves and vibrations, that are emitted from each element. THE DIVINING/DOWSING SO IS THE STUDY FOR THE SEARCH OF WAVES AND VIBRATIONS, THAT ARE EMITTED FROM EACH ELEMENT. As above-said, the main divining working tools, that the diviner can use for any search, are pendulums made of crystal, wood or metal, biotensor, and dowsing rods. They are used as help to detect the vibrations and radiations emitted from each element and person. We will see that the Divining has got a multiplicity of uses. The divining phenomena have in fact an explanation of a physical order: each thing, from the living people to the inorganic material, emits radiations, each one on different wavelengths. Then the diviner, through his divining faculties (They will be developed by divining graphics and also by some particular tactics as we are going to see in this distribution), is able to sense these wavelengths or natural radiations to find the presence of what he is looking for: illnesses inside a person, the medicine, therapy or the more suitable therapeutic approach for the care of an illness and for the holistic care, water, gold, disappeared things, any diagnosis on fields, cars, besides to devise active radionics forms for every vibrational use.So it is possible to do test and diagnosis on:physic problems for any subject, Any mechanical motor For any installation, To find missing things, person animals, Alimentary intolerance for people, animals, To test any therapies for any types of curative approach for person, plants, animals, Any geopatia inside an houses and ground, The search of water wells, petroleum, minerals, depth of the ground, Archaeological and Historical searches, How to arrange and to orient things and furniture inside houses, offices, for making the room healthy in a vibrational way, and so on, To test the healthy colours for whitewashing walls of houses, offices, and so on, To test which plants are more suitable for gardens, houses, offices, rooms in general, To test the better choice for any arguments, the talents and the professional address, of office, of house more suitable, the sport practice, spiritual discipline, To test and project the better geometric forms for building a healthy house… at the end everything which regards your concrete choices for the “present” in general, remembering always of the moral rules which have been expanded in this distribution without developing with the time a form of dependence, if you previously have obtained small results. The Radiesthesia could help you for a more harmonic life. Preparing For The Honeymoon - Now It’s Your World

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

By Eric Hartwell Honeymoons are the dutifully-earned fruits of courtship, dating, wedding planning, and the ceremony. This week-long, sometimes more so, adventure into an exotic or special city, country, or resort is meant to prepare the couple to bond away from home and normal activities. It is the start of your long life together. Make it special. First, choose your destination. There are no rules. Many couples choose exotic places such as Barbados, Jamaica, or the Virgin Islands. If you’re a fan of Europe, choose Austria, France, or Spain. Even in the United States, the Hawaiian Islands, the Grand Canyon, or Carmel are very popular. Gather hotel reviews and entertainment opportunities ahead of time. Set up transportation and confirm your reservations for the hotel you’ll be residing in. Keep your honeymoon upbeat and romantic by planning a plethora of engaging activities like karaoke, plays, movies, long walks, fireworks, or festive gatherings and get-togethers with the locals. Cinema, theater, live bands, folk music, and interesting restaurants spice up the fun. Talk to travel agencies about visa requirements, get your passport, and certify that you’re all set up with the necessary vaccinations. For instance, in Africa, you’ll need to be vaccinated against malaria and other common viral problems. Look out for other specific requirements of certain destinations - it is best to ask or do good research - you don’t want to end up with a problem on your special holiday. Leave contact information, pet maintenance, and house-sitting responsibilities with a friend or family members. You’ll likely be able to find someone quite easily and they are bound to be willing - if you’ve just had a wedding with lots of people of course.
