Alcohol and Your Wedding Reception

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Jasmine Macdonald One of the main decisions a couple has to make when planning a wedding is whether to not to serve alcohol at their reception. Your budget and moral beliefs should play a major role in that decision. Here are a number of options and variations you may want to consider. Limited Budget If you are on a light budget you can offer your guest a cash bar - where the guests pay for their own drinks. (Hint: If you are offering a cash bar make sure your guests know in advance so they can bring money with them. A simple line that says “No-Host-Bar” on the invitation is a good idea.) If you don’t like the idea of a cash bar, how about putting bottles of wine or champagne on each table rather than offering a bar. Arrange with the caterer to serve free soft drinks and coffee along with the wine. (Hint to figure out how much wine you need: You should allow one drink per person per hour. A bottle of champagne/wine will usually serve six glasses). Medium Budget If money is not too tight you might consider offering a Limited Bar. This is the type of bar which you limit what is served to your guests. You can serve only soft drinks, wine, beer, or a combination of soft drinks and wine, or soft drinks and beer. (Hint: Do not offer mixed drinks as this could double your bar bill. You can also limit the time the bar is opened. A reception generally lasts about four hours so you could offer a bar for the first two to three hours. After that time you will only serve soft drinks and coffee. This will not only save you money but will also allow your guests time to sober up before driving home. Unlimited Budget If money is not a major concern, why not offer your guests a full open bar. A full bar is stocked with a full range of beverages. The bar consists of wine, beer, mixed drinks, and soft drinks. With an open bar you pay the entire bill. (Very expensive!) Hint: Do not have waiters/waitresses serve drinks to your guests. If the people have to go to the bar for their own drinks, they will likely drink less; therefore saving you money! No Alcohol If you decide not to serve alcohol at your reception, that is quite alright. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Your guests do not need to drink to have fun. You can serve your guests soft drinks and coffee. For your wedding toast you can offer a small glass of champagne or fruit punch. Remember to stick to your budget when planning your reception. You certainly do not want too to start you new life in debt! Jasmine Macdonald publishes several wedding websites. Bridal Shower Games…The Good, the Bad and the Overdone

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

By Amy Dilling Games can make or break a shower. The best can break the ice and liven up the party. The worst can embarrass and bore. So, how can you avoid this? First, a little research… First, list the showers youve been to and the games you remember. Which did you like and dislike? Ask a few other gals to do the same. Dont ask the bride because the games should be a surprise. Now, compare the games. Which games were played the most? Chances are everyone has played these games and are pretty sick of them. Avoid these overly popular games, unless you think no one minds playing them again and again. Bridal Bingo again? No thanks! The Bride Take into account her personality. If the bride is outgoing and loves the spotlight, find games that will make her the center of attention. A shy bride? Choose ones that will put the focus on the guests instead of the bride. An anti-bride bride? Center games around the theme of the shower instead of bridal-type games. Ask the bride for her opinion without giving away the surprise. Some brides simply detest being enrobed in toilet paper! A movie buff may dig playing Famous Couples. Guest List Not all games are meant for all showers. Consider who will be attending the shower. Most brides would die of embarrassment if Honeymoon Ad Libs was played when her grandmother is at the shower! But, the same game would be hilarious with her sorority sisters. Dont play ice-breaker games if the guests are already acquainted. No one wants to play a name game when they know everyone in the room. Number of Guests If its a large shower, avoid games where every guest shares their thoughts/feelings/best wishes. That could take hours if you have 30 guests! Many guests wont know each other at a larger shower, so plan an icebreaker where guests are split into small groups. With smaller parties, you have more time for each guest to be in the spotlight and share their best wishes for the bride. The Theme A way to spice up shower games is to play up the theme. A cooking shower can have Name that Spice or Gourmet Vocabulary. A wine shower? A wine term quiz would be fun! Timing is Everything! Guests want time to visit, so dont have games take up the entire shower. Plan for about 3 games, but be prepared to ditch one if you run out of time. One 20-minute game and two 5-10 minute games will fit into most schedules. Decide the best time to play the games. Play one game at the beginning of the shower to break the ice. That way, guests can enjoy meeting each other. Ummm Honeymoon Topics” Sure, little comments here and there about the honeymoon are fine and cause giggles, but sex-themed games and food may embarrass the bride or her guests. Save them for the bachelorette party. Grandmother Myrtle will be shocked to realize that the adorable saxophone cookies weresomething else! Memories!Sometimes whats missing from shower games is the reason the guests came in the first placeto celebrate the bride! Creating mementos personalize the party. Consider a game where the end result is a memento especially for the bride. A memory book, scrapbook, or hand-painted dishes are just a few ideas. What about having each guest create a scrapbook page? Amy Dilling is the founder and owner of Perfect Parties to Go!, an online store and resource offering complete bridal and baby showers in a box. Challenging Conventional Wisdom

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Daniel Sitter Challenging conventional wisdom…what a concept! How few of us are willing to risk moving out of our comfort zone, learning to push conventional wisdom aside and grow. Why is it called conventional wisdom anyway? Why; Perhaps, because the very idea of it is associated with being safe and secure. Is that where we really want to be? In today’s fast-changing and ever-shrinking world, new ideas, methods, and processes are being conceived, installed and operated at breakneck speed like never before. There is little room for conventional wisdom anymore, unless of course you are content with living in a bubble, with little direction or growth intentions. I like the old adage, “if you are not growing, you are dying.” Marketing and sales, as well as many other fields, require constant movement and adjustment. The term conventional wisdom reminds me the old excuse because thats the way we have always done it. This overly-used phrase is nothing more than a crude crutch for countless persons. Did you know that someone, in totally-blind ignorance, once had the audacity to say publicly that all the inventions that will ever be invented had already been invented? There is no need for the patent office anymore. As ridiculous as that notion appears today, that particular statement was made at the turn of the 20th century. If anything, we can only dare to imagine the discoveries and advancements that will be made in the next 5 years, let alone the next century! Think Star Wars or the Jetsons. Certainly, there are instances where conventional wisdom is quite appropriate, such as well-accepted norms of behavior, testing procedures and religious practices. I challenge however, the notion of accepting conventional wisdom at the expense of personal and intellectual growth. That is where the element of fear enters in and restricts so many people. Generally, most fear at this level is simply imagined in our minds-eye, thus creating barriers to our progress, self-development and career advances. Although appearing and feeling quite real, it is not. At this point, we need to train ourselves to be conscious of our actual circumstances and work through this fear to find the rewards awaiting us. Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke in his first inaugural address The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. He truly understood people and human nature. FDR would never settle for accepting conventional wisdom, and neither should you. In the world of selling your own ideas, products and services, we must be continuously growing beyond our comfort zone, challenging conventional wisdom along the way. Our ability to persuade others to our point of view as well as our ability to match our goods and services to the needs and wants of others, depends upon living and working in a dynamic environment, not the static world of conventional wisdom. Daniel Sitter, author of the popular e-book, Learning For Profit, and the highly anticipated book, Superior Selling Skills, has extensive experience in sales, training, marketing and personal development over a successful 25 year career. www.learningforprofit.com/. Do You Suffer From Bipolar Depression Symptoms?

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Matt OConnor Research on brain structure and function, neurochemical messenger systems (neurotransmitters), and brain-body connections suggests fundamental, delicate, two-way relationships between the brains environment and mood, behavior, and resistance to disease. One focus of brain research has been to identify and integrate traditional medical and psychiatric knowledge with new psychobiological and psychoneuroimmunologic data. Researchers in the field of psychobiology study the biologic basis of disturbances and have established some relationships between mental disorders and changes in the structure and function of the brain. Findings on research about mental disorders suggest that the health care community ought to place as much emphasis on emotional health as it places on physiological health and ought to recognize how biological, emotional, and societal problems combine to affect individual patients, families, and communities. Typically, people who are mentally healthy are satisfied with themselves and their life situations. When people have unmet emotional needs or distress, they experience an overall feeling of unhappiness. As tension escalates, security and survival are threatened. How different people respond to these troublesome situations reflects their level of coping and maturity. As a consequence, a particular mental disorder, known as bipolar depression, takes place and brings about extraordinary alterations in an individuals energy, frame of mind, temper, and capability to work. Contrary to most popular beliefs, bipolar depression is not an ordinary mood swing, where the individual experiences normal ebb and flow of personal experiences that everybody lives through. The signs of bipolar depression are so grave that it is almost impossible to cure immediately. Bipolar depression, when untreated can bring about serious consequences that may lead to poor functionality, wreaked relationships, and even death as caused by suicide. In the United States, statistical reports show that more than 5 million people are affected with bipolar depression. This is such an alarming state considering the fact that bipolar depression can definitely wreak havoc to ones life, community, or even the whole nation. Bipolar depression can notably manifest drastic changes in ones mood. It can show a drastic, significant change in ones temper, ranging from being extremely bad-tempered to a normal frame of mind. The stages of low and high mood swings are known as episodes of depression and mania. To know more about bipolar depression, here is a list of symptoms of bipolar depression: 1. Extreme irritability Violent and aggressive behavior, usually episodic, is a means of expressing feelings of anger, fear, or hopelessness about a situation. A person who suffers or has a history of outburst rage, temper tantrums, or impulsive behavior, can be suffering from bipolar depression. 2. Amplified energy, restlessness, and activity Patients with bipolar depression have defensive behavior against real or perceived threat to self. These people are impulsive and unreliable. They tend to be hyperactive and commit to a lot of tasks that they cannot even finish. 3. Poor judgment They are in contact with reality but have difficulty dealing with it. Hence, it is hard to impose judgments. 4. Refutation of the current situation They are trying not to be aware that they have a problem. When depression interferes with a persons ability to function comfortably and inhibits the effective management of personal needs, that person is at risk for emotional problems. In order to solve the problem, the patient needs to understand that bipolar depression is treatable. Antidepressants and anti-anxiety agents may be prescribed. Crisis and supportive services in the community include mental health centers, telephone counselling and referral, suicide prevention centers, group therapy, and marital and family counseling. Theres a lot of help out there, we can but hope it gets used. Relationship Reality: Are Your Relationships Based In Reality or Fantasy?

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Shawn Nelson Within the next two to three minutes, you will uncover if you have had relationships based in reality or fantasy! I want you to recall a failed relationship and ask yourself one question, “Why didn’t it work?” Initially, you may answer, “They cheated, lied, changed, etc.” But be honest with yourself. Without honesty there cannot be any changes in your life. The truth may be you created a world in which this person could not live up too! “How is that possible,” is what you are thinking, “I would never do such a thing!” Maybe not intentionally but you do it! Heck, we all do it until we realize we are doing it! Too often you project your image of the person onto them. Thus, creating your fantasy person. We see only the image we created. This is important to recognize early on because at no point did the person ask you to think so highly of them. You focus on their “potential” and figure eventually he/she will get to that place he/she should be to make you happy. However, once the individual steps outside of the image you created you begin to think, “They changed!” But in reality they were the same all a long. In essence, what you have done was create a “virtual reality” or “fantasy world” based on the images present in your mind. That is why many of us get hurt in our relationships. We are not realistic but idealistic. What’s the difference between a Realistic person and an Idealistic person? Realistic: A realistic person will go into a relationship with their eyes open A realistic person will lay the cards on the table and get down to details of what the relationship is going to be A realistic person will speak their mind and say what they feel even though it may hurt the person in the short term A realistic person is honest with the individual regarding their life and shows they care about the person and not focused on what they can get from the individual A realistic person understands there will be problems and issues but working together they can overcome anything A realistic person tends to be more genuine in their love and support And much, much more Idealistic: The idealistic person will forgo the communication and move straight into sex The idealistic person will say “I love you” quick The idealistic person will get emotionally attached quick The idealistic person will think, “This is my dream person.” Technically, they would be right, as it is a dream they are living and their new mate would be a dream person. The idealistic person will cry because their dream relationship did not work out then repeat the process over again The idealistic person will blame everyone else for causing the problem but never look at themselves The idealistic person lives in a fantasy world where everything works and nothing fails The idealistic person is usually kicked square in the face by reality and still will not wake up And much, much more! The question you need to ask yourself is, “Am I a realistic person or am I am idealistic person?” The answer to that question will help you to understand why your relationships end and how to say goodbye to relationship mistakes and avoid unhappy relationships. Now, don’t go analyzing people and prejudging them. This, as well as everything else you may read on other web sites, is just a guide. Use your common sense and just pay attention when you are dealing with people. How Zoom Teeth Whitening Works

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Jared Winston No matter how frequently you brush your teeth, no matter how careful you are when flossing, they will still get yellow after a while. This natural process of teeth loosing their bright white color is aggravated if you are a smoker or if you drink coffee on a regular basis. There are several procedures, such as the Zoom teeth whitening method, that can help your teeth get back to a bright new white in a matter of hours. Apart from the popular Zoom teeth whitening procedure you can also try several others, however, when making the choice, your dentist should also have some advice for you. In general you can opt for an “at home” whitening method or for the several dental office whitening procedures. The last set of procedures includes the Zoom teeth whitening method let’s see why this procedure is so effective. How does Zoom teeth whitening work? This method consists of a mixture of gel and special light wave treatments. The patient is seated and the dentist uses a retractor to separate the lips from the teeth so that the gel can be applied. A special gel is then applied on all the exterior faces of the teeth. The dentist is careful, at this point, not to let the gel touch the patients gums too much, as it may cause irritation or lesions. After the Zoom teeth whitening gel covers the teeth uniformly, the dentist will shine a special bright light on it for about one hour. The special properties of the Zoom teeth whitening gel and the energy produced by the lamp produce chemical reactions that lead to tooth whitening. Although waiting for an hour in the dentist’s chair for the gel and light waves to take effect might sound boring, it is one of the best tooth whitening methods available today. How long does it last and what effects can I expect? The answers to the questions are different from one person to another. In most cases, a Zoom teeth whitening procedure is done twice a year. An average person who drinks coffee frequently and smokes daily will have improved tooth brightness - around 10 shades brighter. After the procedure is completed, the teeth will gradually start to regain their yellowish color over time, depending on how well you take care of them. On average, people who went through in office tooth whitening procedures noticed that their teeth stay white for months, although the initial brightness does not last more than a few weeks. The beauty of this system is that it is fast, efficient and has no side effects (although some patients did experience tooth sensitivity for one or two days after the procedure). Overall, Zoom teeth whitening is an excellent choice for anyone looking to get a bright and attractive smile. Copyright Jared Winston, 2006. All Rights Reserved. The Top 10 Tips to Weight Loss, Health, and Fitness-Tip #2

Dont Kiss and Tell9. Stockpile Mental Ammo10. Seek and Shine Tip #2: Get Satisfied, Not Stuffed As human beings, we have basic instincts that keep us alive and thriving. Our thirst drive tells us when we need to hydrate our bodies. Our sex drive is critical for reproduction and the procreation of the human race. Our hunger drive tells us when we should eat. Although many of us try to fight against our hunger drive, especially when we are dieting, the hunger drive always wins. Thats why we cant starve ourselves forever on calorie-restricted dietsbecause we get hungry with too few calories and not enough nutrition. We cant fight a basic instinct. We get hungry for one very fundamental reasonour bodies need nourishment. A full stomach doesnt necessarily mean nourishment. Thats why you can eat a large meal and still feel hungry afterwardbecause you filled your stomach with foods empty of nutrients that feed your body. The bottom line is: we should eat when we are hungry, but choose foods that are nutrient-dense, fiber-dense, and fat-, cholesterol-, and calorie-sparse. And we should stop eating when we are not hungry anymore. Eat until your brain, not your stomach, tells you that you are satisfied. This takes a while to get used to but, rather than eating until your stomach is over full and distended, eat until your brain tells you that you have eaten enough. In other words, eat good-for-you foods until you are satisfied, not stuffed. If you eat until you feel stuffed, then you have packed away too much food and too many calories. It takes trial and error to learn the difference between satisfied and stuffed, and to have the awareness and self-discipline to respond appropriatelystop eating. However, by adopting a plant-based diet, it is doable. In fact, over time, you will find that the difference between feeling satisfied and feeling stuffed is not subtle at all, and it is much more comfortable to stop eating before your stomach gets overloaded. Online Banking

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Michael Russell Before you do this, make sure to compare existing offers from at least three different facilities, such as banks, building societies and other financial institutions. Your bank doesnt necessarily give you the best deal just because you are currently banking with them. It pays to shop around before you make a decision and inform yourself. Most financial institutions worldwide offer online banking these days. So it shouldnt be too hard to find something suitable for your needs. What are the benefits of online banking? For starters it is a convenience, as it allows us to deal with our banking needs totally from the comfort of our home or office. As long as you have an internet connection and an online account set up, you are set to go. Most banks offer a host of different activities in your online banking account such as: transfer funds (moving/sending money from one account to another), pay anyone (send money from your account to another account), schedule your regular bill payments (organizing your bills to be paid on a certain recurring date), check balances of your account anytime (whether day or night), apply for an online loan, see a list of all/any transactions you have made from your account and the ability to print them out if needed, financial planner (the ability to plan your finances via a help function), order cheques (you can even order cheques to pay your bills if you like online). Online banking is easy to learn and apply. However, there is a serious side to it and that is internet security. Banks go to great length these days to keep your money and your data safe from online crooks. You will be supplied with a password, which you should change as soon as you have your account set up. There are also rules and regulations (the fine print) you will have to agree to, before opening your account. It certainly pays to read them in detail prior to adding your signature to the contract. Yes, you will be entering into a contract with your bank, just as you do with offline activities. So make sure you read this contract carefully before signing anything. You will avoid nasty surprises if you do this correctly. As with many things these days there are always pros and cons to apply a certain method such as online banking. On the positive side online banking is great because: it eliminates cutting down trees and therefore it is beneficial to the environment, you can check your account balance anytime 24 hours/7 days week, you dont have to spend time waiting in bank queues, you can send money to anywhere in the world with a click of a button, it simply is an easier way to do your banking. On the negative side, online banking might not be a good option for some because: someone could steal your money from your account via hacking into it and you will need your own computer to do online banking (you can do it in an internet caf, but this is not recommended due to security reasons). Some people still wonder whether online banking is safe. It also eliminates a lot of jobs in the workforce. When you get paid via cheques you will still have to go to your local branch to cash them. Whatever it is you believe regarding online banking, you will have to make the right decision that is best suited to you and your needs. For most of the people who choose online banking, it is probably the convenience factor that really convinces them the most. As an online banking customer you have legal rights to protect you and your identity. These are also called consumer rights. They have been established to protect you as the customer and to make sure that the bank is operating within the law. Customer Lifetime Value - The Key To Maximizing Your Profits!

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

By Larry Lim The greatest asset to your business is your Customer, specifically, your Customer Lifetime Value. In my many years in Sales and Marketing, I’ve met many CEOs and business owners who don’t have much clue as to what Customer Lifetime Value is, much less its importance and the impact it has on their bottomline. To most of them, what matters most is to increase revenue by continuously acquiring new one-shot customers. This is one of the fatal mistakes that many business owners make; it’s a sad scenario, but it’s also the reality. Let me tell you something: it’ll cost you 5 times more to attract a new customer than it is to bring one of your past customers back to you. I don’t know you personally, but if you’re a smart business owner, you’ll understand that every cent you invest in advertising is going towards acquiring new customers. You’ll also realise that once you’ve acquired the customers, you just can’t afford to let them go. So what’s Customer Lifetime Value? Customer Lifetime Value is defined as the total value, in monetary terms, of your average customers spanning the entire period that these customers are likely to do business with you. It’s the potential contribution of your customers to your business over a period of time. Here’s how to calculate your Customer Lifetime Value: 1). Let’s say you’ve 2,000 steady customers and these customers remain with you for an average of two years; for the past two years, your net profit was $700,000. The Customer Lifetime Value can be calculated as: $700,000/2,000 = $350. What this means is that over an average customer lifespan of two years, each new customer you could acquire and keep is worth $350 to you in profits. 2). If you do not have the actual figures, you’ll have to estimate. As the Customer Lifetime Value will have a significant impact on your bottomline, my advice is that you be prudent and conservative in your estimation. Why is it so important to you and your business? Lifetime Customer Value is important to you and your business for the following reasons: 1). Knowing the Lifetime Value of your customers is crucial to you and your business as it serves as a benchmark without which you’ll be groping in the dark. When you know the Lifetime Value of your customers, you can determine how much time, effort and money you can afford to invest to acquire that customer in the first instance. In other words, you can invest more today to reap a much larger profits later down the road as long as your cashflow is healthy and can support it. Every marketing campaign that you undertake costs you money as well as reaping you benefits such as increased sales, enhanced corporate image, etc. But how can you be sure that the benefits would outweigh the costs or investments? This is where knowing the Customer Lifetime Value is so powerful - it helps you to determine this even before you launch your marketing campaign. 2). When you realize that customers are actually an ongoing stream of revenue as opposed to a one-shot sale, you can re-focus your marketing efforts. Instead of contantly struggling to acquire more and more new customers, you can now begin to focus on keeping your existing customers longer and selling to them repeatedly, in other words, repeat sales. You may spend more like making stronger and more attractive offers than your competition in acquiring new customers now who will be your money spinners tomorrow. This makes sense because you now know that on average you’ll more than make it back over the years that the customers are with you and therefore you could afford to break even or even lose money now in acquiring the new customers. Start shifting your focus to Customer Lifetime Value and maximise your profits today! Start to have a proper understanding of Customer Lifetime Value because it’s key to the success of your business. It’ll allow you to acquire more customers than your competition through better and more attractive offers; it’ll dramatically increase your bottomline through more repeat sales and shoot your profits through the roof. Skin Care- Control Body Odor

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By CD Mohatta Sweat controls our body temperature. Sweat also is responsible for body odor. When bacteria react with sweat, it produces odor. Similarly pheromones that are emitted by apocrine glands also have an odor. Let us find out how to control excess sweat and control body odor. Skin care- how sweat produces odor? Eccrine sweat is produced by eccrine sweat glands that are distributed all over the body. This sweat that is mainly water with very small amount of salt, sugar, urea etc. is odorless. As this sweat appears on the skin surface it softens the epidermal keratin producing smell as a result. Bacteria feed upon the keratin and sweat and produce odor. In other areas of body, such as armpit, the skin is folded and moist and warm. That is the ideal place for bacteria to feed upon sweat and produce odor. Apocrine glands are mainly located around area such as scalp, groin and armpits. They produce fatty sweat with pheromones. Bacteria again break down this sweat and result is bad odor. The excess of sweat and /or bacteria can produce more body odor. The obvious solution to body odor is therefore- reduction or drying of excess sweat as soon as possible and keeping the skin free of bacteria. Here you should note that if you have any yeast infection, that can worsen the odor. Skin care and control of sweat and odor- Control sweat with antiperspirants. If you are having the problem of excess sweating, please consult your doctor who will suggest other methods such as botox injections and other methods. Washing body with antibacterial soap is a good idea. Keep skin dry as much as possible and change clothes that may be been worn while you had sweat because clothes continue to carry sweat producing bacteria until they are washed.. Clothes may have dried, but they carry the stench of sweat with them. Please change clothes after any activity that produces sweat. Some foods such as caffinated drinks, garlic, onions may add to sweat smell or excess sweating. Avoid these foods. Control sweat, control bacteria and keep body dry to keep yourself smelling fresh at all the times for better skin care. This article is only for informative purposes.
