By Jim Dandeneau This story is for those of you who have seen it all. Now Ive fished almost the entire west coast of North America and only done this once. My dad asks me to go rock cod fishing with him and as usual I say yes. So we load the truck with poles, reels, tackle, ice chest and motor to Oxnard, Calif. We leave dock at about 11:00 pm, to be at the fishing spot, Pickup bait at the holding barge then head out to sea. As the boat cruises outward, the seas start to pick up. It wasn’t long before every body noticed the waves slamming the side of the ship. Now mind you, these are only six foot waves and our ship was 85ft bow to stern. Thats a pretty good size ship for an overnighter. But something never occurred to most of us sea worthy, seasoned veterans of the ocean. The beam of the boat was as narrow as an arrow. As the night goes on, things get worse. A big wave breaches the starboard side while some of us are eating, sending plates of food flying everywhere. Bruised ribs came from being pushed into the edge of the galley tables. I thought to myself, the boat is going to roll over. Houston, we have a problem. Even before the sun comes up, all persons onboard are seasick, excepting my dad, who had to stay below because of his age, and myself. Who’s driving the boat? I’ll never know. The entire crew, the fishermen were hanging over the side. Anybodys guess, the skipper takes us to the leeward side of Santa Cruz Island. Like magic all the anglers are all better. With little time left, the fishing starts. Nobody, including myself gets even one bite. The skipper says reel them up, so we do. When I pull in my line, I find I have this tiny fish on the end of my line. I didnt hook it, I snagged it, behind the gills. Now, since nobody else caught a fish, I won, for the first time, the jackpot. All’s well that ends well. The 6 Types of Women You Should Never Contact on MySpace

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Scott Patterson According to new studies, MySpace has become the most popular site for meeting women! So I have to ask you, do you MySpace? If you’ve tried this site to meet women, then you’ve probably realized that it’s actually pretty difficult to meet women. One reason is there a lot of stiff competition from other men. The other reason is there is a lot of women on this site who say they’re looking for dating, but instead they’re out to take advantage of you. Let me explain. Some “women” on this site are not out there to make connections or date. Instead they’re on this site to make a profit or to build their ego. In this article, I will discuss the different types of women on MySpace and why you should NOT contact them. If you know how to identify the “women” who are not interested in dating, you can save a lot of time and aggravation. 1- Avoid the ‘Friend Whores’ There are a lot of women on MySpace who are only interested in bulking up their list of friends. These ‘friend whores’ don’t want to know you, they just want a high number of friends. Any attempts to talk to these women will be ignored. Bottom line is they’re not interested in getting to know the guys on their list. So if you see a woman with more then a couple hundred friends, then you know she’s not interested in dating. Just move on and find someone who is open to talking to a guy. 2- Avoid the Web Cam or Porn Girls If you’ve been on MySpace for more then a minute then you’ve probably come across the ‘web cam’ or ‘porn girl’. Typically they operate like this You get a message or a friend request from a girl who thinks you’re interesting but she doesn’t have time to talk. But if you go to her “private” site, she’ll be able to talk to you. It goes without saying these women are complete fakes. They’re only interested in you pulling out your credit card and paying for access to their porn website. 3- Avoid the Businesses Marketers and businesses are getting smart these days! They know if they slap a pretty female face on a profile, men will be more responsive to friend requests and will check out any site that is recommended on their profile. Instead of looking for a date, these type of people want you to check out their website. As a you can see, they are on MySpace to make money. 4- Avoid the Phishers and Criminals The phishers and criminals are the worst type of people you can encounter on MySpace. These people are on this site for the sole purpose of obtaining your private information to rip you off. Their goal is to control your account or even gain access to your financial information. Here is how they operate: These criminals will send a message or bulletin asking you to check out a site or page. On this page is a script which informs you that you’ve been logged off MySpace. It then tells you enter your MySpace account data. Once you enter this information, the criminals will have your private information! So one second you think you’re talking to a pretty girl then suddenly a criminal has access to your important data. 5- Avoid the Models, Stars, Comedians and Bands There is a group of people on MySpace who request friends in order to build buzz about their work. So if you get a friend request from a model, star, comedian or band it’s not because of your charm, wit or good looks. It’s because they want you check out their profile and support their work. Now I’m not against this type of promotion. I just want to recommend that you don’t waste your time trying to hit on any of these people. Your messages will go unanswered. 6- Avoid the ‘Suspect Women’ The final group of people you should avoid on MySpace can be a large group. My advice is to always look at her entire profile (not just the pics) before contacting a girl. Look for anything that looks suspicious which might raise any warning bells. For instance, here are a couple of things you should look for: A profile that states a girl is 18 and older, yet she makes a reference to being in high school A girl with hundreds of comments from guys Any girl who has lots of friends, but doesn’t seem to receive any personal comments Any profile with ‘Tom’ as the number one friend As you can see, there are a lot of pitfalls when trying to date women on MySpace. While I think this site is an excellent source for finding available women in your area, you should know what to look for and the type of women to avoid. Just use common sense and don’t waste time with women who aren’t interested in dating. Want to know additional ways to find women beyond using MySpace? Hoodia Gordonii - Do Hoodia Diet Pills Work For Weight Loss?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Samantha Bender What you need to know about Hoodia Gordonii Hoodia Gordonii (pronounced HOO-dee-ah) is also called hoodia, xhooba, !khoba, Ghaap, hoodia cactus, and South African desert cactus. Hoodia is a cactus that’s causing a stir for its ability to suppress appetite and promote weight loss. 60 Minutes, ABC, and the BBC have all done stories on hoodia. Hoodia is sold in capsule, liquid, or tea form in health food stores and on the Internet. Hoodia gordonii can be found in the semi-deserts of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola. Hoodia grows in clumps of green upright stems and is actually a succulent, not a cactus. It takes about 5 years before hoodia’s pale purple flowers appear and the cactus can be harvested. Although there are 20 types of hoodia, only the hoodia gordonii variety is believed to contain the natural appetite suppressant. Although hoodia was “discovered” relatively recently, the San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert have been eating it for a very long time. The Bushmen, who live off the land, would cut off part of the hoodia stem and eat it to ward off hunger and thirst during nomadic hunting trips. They also used hoodia for severe abdominal cramps, haemorrhoids, tuberculosis, indigestion, hypertension and diabetes. In 1937, a Dutch anthropologist studying the San Bushmen noted that they used hoodia to suppress appetite. But it wasn’t until 1963 when scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa’s national laboratory, began studying hoodia. Initial results were promising — lab animals lost weight after taking hoodia gordonii. The South African scientists, working with a British company named Phytopharm, isolated the active ingredient in hoodia, a steroidal glycoside, which they named p57. After getting a patent in 1995, they licensed p57 to Phytopharm. Phytopharm has spent more than $20 million on hoodia research. Eventually pharmaceutical giant Pfizer (makers of Viagra) caught wind of hoodia and became interested in developing a hoodia drug. In 1998, Phytopharm sub-licensed the rights to develop p57 to Pfizer for $21 million. Pfizer recently returned the rights to hoodia to Phytopharm, who is now working with Unilever. What you need to know about hoodia Hoodia Appears To Suppress Appetite Much of the buzz about hoodia started after 60 minutes correspondent Leslie Stahl and crew traveled to Africa to try hoodia. They hired a local Bushman to go with them into the desert and track down some hoodia. Stahl ate it, describing it as “cucumbery in texture, but not bad.” She lost the desire to eat or drink the entire day. She also didn’t experience any immediate side effects, such as indigestion or heart palpitations. Stahl concluded, “I’d have to say it did work.” In animal studies, hoodia is believed to reduce caloric intake by 30 to 50 percent. There is one human study showing a reduced intake of about 1000 calories per day. However, I haven’t been able to find either study to actually read for myself and am going on secondhand reports. 5 Simple Ways to Great Online Dating!

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Danette Collins Online dating can be a wonderful way to meet new and interesting people. However, the process can be a little intimidating for those new to dating online. If you want the best experience possible try these five simple ways to great online dating: 1) Post a recent photo If you are going to try online dating get comfortable with the fact that the most viewed profiles are those with at least one member photo. Most sites allow for multiple photos so take advantage and upload several. Make sure your photos are recent - not more than 6 months old is ideal. Matches should be able to recognize you when you finally meet. Believe me - posting a photo of yourself 10 years younger and 20 lbs. lighter will do nothing to improve your dating experience. 2) Be honest in your profile Present yourself in the best light possible but be honest about your abilities. You don’t want to build unrealistic expectations just to disappoint your matches when you finally meet. 3) Get to know your matches It can be easy to get carried away in the excitement of meeting someone new! While you should definitely have fun and enjoy the experience it is also a time for caution. Take time to learn as much as possible about your match. Don’t share personal information with anyone until you feel comfortable doing so. Don’t take the relationship to another level if you have doubts regarding your match’s honesty. 4) Be polite People have a tendency to feel anonymous online. Treat people with the same respect and courtesy online as you would offline. If you are interested in someone and they don’t respond to your inquiries - move on! There is no excuse for sending rude communication to another member. You can’t know what is going on in their lives at the moment. Leave the door open for communication in the future! You just might be pleasantly surprised. 5) Where’s the chemistry? Not every match will be a good match! There is no substitute for meeting face to face. You might have great online chemistry only to find you have little or no chemistry offline. It happens. If you’ve come face to face with your online fling and just aren’t attracted to them - don’t panic. Hopefully you have set a short 30 minute first meeting. You aren’t obligated to meet again. If the chemistry just isn’t there they are probably going to know it also. However, if they ask to get together again just be honest. No one appreciates having that situation prolonged. Most of all enjoy your online dating experience. At the very least you’ll meet some wonderful new friends. TMI: The Resume Destroyer

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Pierre Daunic They say my rsum should be only one page long. Is that correct? Not necessarily. Many rsums are rightly two, three, or even more pages in length. On the other hand, many rsums are far longer than necessary. Carelessly written, they contain TMIToo Much Informationand that mind-numbing surplus can damage or destroy a rsums ability to generate a job interview. Here are some tips to help you avoid that possibility: Eliminate fluff. Some of us use bloated, hackneyed, or empty phrasing that just takes up space. For example, a rsums objective might say something like Accomplished Mechanical Engineer seeks an upwardly mobile, challenging position in a growing company. Better: A continuing career in Mechanical Engineering. Be ruthless in cutting out language that serves no plausible purpose. Weed out the unnecessary. Few readers enjoy plowing through overly detailed job descriptions on a rsum. Make sure your duties, responsibilities, and achievements are described in only as much detail as necessary. Avoid flop-overs. Save space better used elsewhere by rewriting sentences or paragraphs that end with only a few words on the next line or on the next page. Not only will your writing look neater, but you may also save space better used elsewhere. Downplay old experience. In most cases, the last 10 15 years of our work experience are the most relevant to our next job. Showcase your skills and achievements in that span in as much detail as prudent. Then, shorten earlier job descriptions accordingly. Use bullets. Use bullets (but not too many) to describe achievements or skill sets because They often take up less space. They allow you to prioritize more easily. They grab the readers attention. (See?) Use different formatting. Change the top, side, and bottom margins to as little as one half inch if appearance permits. Or reduce the size of your text font to 10 point (but no smaller). Or try using a font like Garamond instead of Times New Roman: it will take up less space. Or try using a condensed font such as Weissach Condensed. A little experimentation will probably yield big results; however, whether you use these suggestions or others, just make sure readability is not harmed. Delete References Furnished on Request. Often found at the end of a rsum, the phrase has little importance. If an employer wants references, he will ask for them anyway. Utilizing the tips above, you may be able to reduce the length of your rsum by a page or more without sacrificing meaning, impact, or readability. In fact, when your copy is clear, concise, and properly formatted, it gives you more space to set forth your skills and achievements in a professional and well-appreciated fashion. Try ityoull see what I mean! Pierre Daunic, senior consultant for R.L. Stevens & Associates Inc. 12 Ways to Make Sure Your Messages Are Dead-On, Not Dead on Arrival

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Eric Swartz If I wanted to send you a message, I would have sent you a telegram. –Attributed to Samuel Goldwyn 1882-1974 As Mr. Goldwyn would have you believe, there were no intended messages in any of his movies. But there was a message nonetheless. Despite its acknowledged importance, the message is often the most neglected and underestimated component of a marketing communications campaign. Once created, its seldom scrutinized. Once sent, its rarely revisited or revised. The result can be a campaign that lacks a central message or, far worse, communicates a mixed, muddled, or potentially damaging message. In either case, if your intended audience doesnt get the message, youve probably sent the wrong one. And that can have dire consequences. Defining The Message. The message is the whole point of your campaign giving it focus, urgency, and a distinctive character. Defined as a formal, inspired, or important communication, the message is not only what you say (text), but what you mean (subtext), and how you say it (context). Its mission is to articulate a compelling idea that invites your audiences attention, acceptance, and response. A message can target either a nation, an industry, an organization, a household, or an individual. It can be used to state a position, announce a solution, present an alternative, address a crisis, offer assistance, or make a plea. It can have broad and universal appeal (Save the planet) or can be very narrow and specific (Save time commuting). As the delivery system for your brand, your message is the embodiment of your companys vision and values. It reveals how well you know your customers, and how much you value your relationship with them. In practical terms, the message is the primary vehicle for sharing your thinking, establishing common ground, and achieving consensus. Creating The Message. Sending the right message to the right person at the right time is what good marketing is all about. Its the glue that unifies your marketing communications and makes your brand stand out in a crowded field. Messages can take many forms via many marketing channels, but they all have one thing in common: They seek mind share — whether theyre preaching to the choir or recruiting new buyers and believers. Asking for your time, money, and good will, messages appeal to reason but work on your emotions. Their main purpose is to get you to renew your faith, change your mind, and take decisive action. Although your last message may have been timely, relevant, and compelling, it may not resonate in quite the same way the next time you send it. Markets shift, customers drift, and messages stagnate when they cant cut through the clutter. To make sure your messages hit the right mark and strike the right chord, here are twelve fundamental rules that have guided me faithfully over the years: Think Big Every message should embrace one big idea. The bolder, the better. Focus on the big picture, not the minutiae. Failure to do so will result in your message being diluted, drowned out, and quickly forgotten. Find a major theme to anchor and amplify your message. Put an appropriate frame around it to give it perspective and gravitas. Create affinity with your customers by inspiring them with your vision, and inviting them along for the ride. Make It Personal The old adage still applies: Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care. The customer is the center of your universe, not your product. Dont pay lip serviceprovide customer service. Put a human face on your company. Make your messages intimate and conversational, and use the magic word YOU with reckless abandon. Make it an advantage to become and remain your customer. Share your passion and contagious enthusiasm. After all, youre building relationships, not selling widgets. Emphasize Solutions Lets face it, if youre in business, youre here to solve your customers problems. Its the single biggest opportunity staring you in the face. Tell your customers why they need your service now, and how youre best equipped to deliver results. Do everything in your power to make their job easier and give them peace of mind. Communicate the benefits of doing business with your company, and find ways of contributing to their success. If you can make a real difference in the lives of your customers, youll capture not only their business, but their loyalty. Aligning The Message. Align your message with the people whose opinions matter your customers, prospects, employees, management, investors, and the press. Since each of your stakeholders has a slightly different perspective, be sensitive to those differences by adjusting your messages style, tone, and language accordingly. Alignment also means making sure your message gives you a distinct advantage in the marketplace. How does it stack up against competing messages? Does it really set you apart from the pack? Know Your Audience Every message has one or more target audiences. How well do you know yours? Do they have a global or local outlook? What are their aspirations and expectations? What are their hot buttons? Do they prefer long copy or short copy? Hard copy or e-mail? What kind of sense of humor do they have? Do they respond to certain trigger words, images, and offers? Since one message doesnt fit all, craft a message that reflects your audiences values, preferences, and points of view. To arouse their interest, you must first get their attention. Keep It Real Your customers are smart, savvy, and sophisticated and can spot malarkey a mile away. If you treat them with respect, youll never go wrong. To do that, you need to understand their sense of reality. If your message rings true, youll always be judged as convincing and credible. Before you send your customers a message, proof it for any hype or patronizing language that can rub them the wrong way. Check your facts, too. Its okay to be clever, but watch out for that Kentucky windage. It could blow your best customers away…for good. Be Competitive Keep score of your messages. Are they winners or losers? Grand slams or ground-outs? Since youre competing for mind share, make each message count. And play to win. The competition can throw some wicked curves. Before you know it, your position has been co-opted and your message is toast. The important thing is to get a grip on your main message, keep your eye on the ball, and swing for the fences. Focus on why youre in business, and what makes you unique. Give your customers and employees something to cheer about. Integrating The Message. Integrate your message across all the marketing channels you plan to use from advertising, PR, direct mail, and collateral to newsletters, trade shows, and the web. Integration ensures your message resonates clearly and consistently across all media. It also ensures each medium is exploited to its maximum advantage, and that no part of your message is minimized, distorted, or lost in the shuffle. Make It Clear Your main message should be crystal clear — whether its written or oral, long or short, in print or online. The effectiveness of your message is largely dependent on the clarity of its presentation. What strikes you as clean in a brochure may look busy on the web, and a punchy message online may look rather sketchy in a mailer. Increase message clarity by emphasizing key components, such as the headline, sub-heads, and the call to action. Bulletize the main points. Box the offer. Add pictures, tables, and charts. There are lots of ways to tell a story. Just make sure your message retains its clarity in all of its incarnations. Keep It Simple Whoever said Keep it simple, stupid! was no dummy. Its amazing how many messages get sabotaged by trendy and meaningless business jargon. A 10-cent word can convey your idea just as well as a 50-cent word. Im not suggesting you dumb down your copy. However, in order to strengthen your main message, take out the pruning shears and cut away everything thats arcane, irrelevant, or overly technical. If needless verbiage gets in the way of your message, drop it or find a simpler way of saying it. Be Consistent Messages thrive on consistency across media and over time creating instant recognition and audience acceptance. Familiarize yourself with the continuity of your brand messages. Is your position being communicated accurately? Are all of your customers getting the identical offer by phone, mail, and web? Is there a coherent look and feel to all of your marcom materials? Is the tone still on target? If youre using multiple agencies, there could be a disconnect. Control the consistency — and youll control the message. Packaging the Message. Package your message by using all the tools at your disposal to sell the big idea, touch a nerve, and inspire action. Packaging ensures your message has an urgency to it. Innovation, originality, and timeliness all contribute to making your message meaningful and memorable. Message packaging brings everything together under a single roof unifying your brand personality, character, and promise. Make It Compelling What makes a message compelling? Is it the free offer? The iron-clad guarantee? The gushing testimonials? The edgy creative and clever copy? Its all of those thingsand more. A compelling message has a story behind it, a story with dramatic appeal. Its show time! What makes your customers go A-HA? What will move them to action and inspire their loyalty? First of all, it helps if they believe you and trust you. Communicate with your customers often, listen for the gold, and keep your promises. Then make them an offer they cant refuse. Be Creative Legendary adman, George Lois, once said that creativity is the defeat of habit by originality. As a process of discovery and execution, its a way of finding a new solution to an old problem, and applying it appropriately. Whatever process you use, reinvent your old bag of tricks from time to time. Challenge yourself. Break from convention, but know the rules youre breaking. Make your message fun and fresh. Surprise and delight an unsuspecting world. Of course, that means going the extra mile. But, as they say, its never crowded. Seize The Moment Timing is everything. Thats how campaigns are won and lostone customer at a time. When the opportunity arises to communicate with a customer, reinforce your main message, update it accordingly, and always be prepared to deliver a flawless 30-second elevator pitch. Unlike fine wine, messages dont age well. If your corporate brochure has turned a sickly yellow, your message probably needs a complete makeover. Raise the stakes by bringing an urgency to your most important messages. Your customers are likely to pay more attention if they know theres a deadline — and a decision to be made. Carpe momentum! Wrapping Up The Message. Your message is in a constant struggle to be heard and understood in a vast wasteland of competing messages. After all is said and done, its primary objective remains the same: To penetrate the mind, soften the heart, and open the wallet. Your message says a lot about you, especially the beliefs and values you share with your audience. The next time you create a message, look at it from the perspective of the recipient: What are they telling me? (Do I believe it?) What are they selling me? (Do I need it?) What are they offering me? (Do I want it?) In the course of your campaign, review and test your message often to make sure its still dead-on. Let the twelve rules be your guide. Of course, as a last resort, if your customers still dont get the message, you can always send them a telegram. 2003 Eric Stephen Swartz. All rights reserved. Perfume Definitions And Facts

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Sandy Lindberg The following are definitions and facts about perfume that you may not know. This information might enlighten, delight, and educate you when purchasing the right fragrance for you or for someone else. Perfume Pleasant odor, a preparation used for scenting, fragrant, sweet, or agreeable in smell. (parfum) Perfumery A perfume house that creates perfumes. Nose A nose is a person who creates fragrances. Years ago perfume making was handed down throughout generations among families. However, now there are schools dedicated to the science of perfume making. Currently, there are three major French perfume-makers having their own in-house blender. These three are Chanel, Guerlain, and Jean Patou. Eau de Parfum (EDP) 10-30% aromatic compounds. Usually has the most intensity and longevity. Eau de Toilette (EDT) 5-20% aromatic compounds. Usually is less intense and less longevity than EDP. NOTE: Different design houses may vary the intensity where EDT may be stronger than EDP. Eau de Cologne (EDC) 2-5% aromatic compounds. This is a type of light perfume that originated in Cologne, Germany and is defined by its typical concentration of about 2-5% esential oils. Eau de Cologne, or just “cologne”, has now become a generic term. Ironically, however, the original Eau de Cologne from Cologne is not an Eau de cologne, but anEau de Toilette, because it contains more than 5% aromatic compounds. Why do many older people use too much perfume? As people get older, their sense of smell diminishes. Therefore, they apply too much perfume. Does a fragrance smell the same on everyone? No. Everyone has a unique body chemistry based on skin type, hair color, and the environment in which we live. It is important to try a fragrance on your skin to see how it reacts with your own body chemistry. Also, different skin types affect the fragrance. Oily skin holds scents much more than dry skin. People with dry skin need to reapply more often. How long can a fragrance be stored? Fragrances do not last forever. Fragrance bottles should be stored in a dry, dark place. Keep them away from heat as extreme temperatures can detroy them. Colognes and eau de toilettes (not parfum) may be kept in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Fragrances can last up to three years from manufacture date. Take care to check dates. Does perfume stain clothing? Most perfumes are safe to spray on your clothes without leaving a stain. Five Daily Habits For Better Vision

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Gunnar Storms Bad vision habits are a major factor in the poor eyesight of the more than 150 million Americans who currently wear glasses or contacts. Most of these Americans go through the entire day doing things that are detrimental to their vision, such as reading magazines and books, watching tv for long periods, avoiding sunlight, and the major culprit of staring at a computer screen for hours at a time. And to make matters worse they usually do nothing when it comes to improving their vision or even maintaining their current eyesight. Instead they usually resort to glasses and contacts which actually weaken your eyes since you’re not using them and exercising them. The result is declining vision and the need for a stronger prescription and thicker lenses year after year. Fortunately there are ways you can incorporate vision improvement into your daily life. Here’s a few that you can probably start doing right now: 1. When reading books, newspapers, or magazines, try to hold it at a distance and find a length where you can read the letters but you really have to focus. Doing this for a long time may give you a headache so I only recommend doing it for a few minutes anytime you are reading. If done on a regular basis you will start to notice that you will be able to hold it at a further distance and still read the words. Keep holding it at a further length to continue to improve your vision. 2. In the morning, splash warm water then cold water 20 times each over your closed eyes. In the evening before going to bed, splash your eyes 20 times with cold water then warm water. This relaxes the eyes and improves circulation. I notice that my vision is usually a little clearer immediately after doing this. Another method is to take two containers, fill one with warm water, the other with cold water. Place a cloth in each one and let them soak. Tilt your head back or lay down and place the wet cloth over your closed eyes. Alternate between the warm and cold cloths. 3. If you take a bus or train route or are a passenger in a car use this opportunity to look out the window and focus on objects in the distance. This is especially good since the objects are moving and changing quickly. While focusing on an object, try to really focus on the details. For example if you’re looking at a tree, try to really focus on the individual leaves. You can practice near/far focusing by focusing on an object in the distance such as a house and then quickly looking at something in front of you such as a scratch on the window. If you are driving, try using the few seconds stopped at a red light to focus on something in the far distance. 4. If you’re like an increasing number of Americans, myself included, you spend a significant amount of time every day sitting behind the computer. This can be extremely detrimental to your vision since you’re staring at something inches away from your face for hours at a time, and also causes eyestrain. However it doesn’t have to be. When sitting on the computer simply take a few seconds every 10 minutes or so to take your eyes off the monitor and stare at an object in the distance. This can reduce eyestrain and fatigue. I would also suggest taking a few minutes to have a palming and eye rotation session every half hour or so. 5. Another major culprit of declining vision is wearing sunglasses. Although this may sound ironic since many people wearsunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun the truth is that proper amounts of sunlight are a necessity for healthy vision. Many Americans go through the entire day without exposing their eyes to the circulation and nutrients that sunlight provides by staying inside all day at work, at home behind the tv or the computer, and wearing sunglasses to shield their eyes when even they do go outside. You shouldn’t expect to get 20/20 vision solely from doing these exercises, especially if your eyesight is currently very poor. However, they certainly do help, and at the very least will help maintain your current level of vision. If you’re really serious about freeing yourself from glasses, then you also need to know the exercises and techniques that will successfully improve your vision. You also need to be aware of proper nutrition and diet, which is also an important part in maintaining good eyesight. Declaring an Authentic Niche Market

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Molly Gordon niche 1. A recess in a wall, as for holding a statue. 2. A cranny, hollow, or crevice, as in a rock. 3. A situation or activity specially suited to a persons abilities or character. 4. Ecol. a. The set of functional relationships of an organism or population to the environment it occupies. b. The area within a habitat occupied by an organism. The American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition For years I struggled with the concept of niche. I knew that choosing the right niche market was considered essential to business success, yet for me, as for many professionals, choosing a niche felt like the kiss of death. When we dig in our heels against choosing a niche, we are probably responding to the first two definitions above. After all, who wants to do business in a hole in a wall or in a tiny, rocky place? If you believe that defining your niche market means choosing a hard, cramped, and confining space, no wonder you resist. People who bring their heart and soul to their work will resist niche marketing that tells them they must restrict the ways in which they offer value to the world. The good news is that choosing your niche market will do exactly the opposite: it will free you to be the biggest, most authentic, and most complete offer possible. Consider the third and fourth definitions of niche. When you look at niche in this light, you will see that your perfect niche market is that location or domain in which you are most readily accessible to the people who are most likely to benefit from (and thus value) the offer that you are and in which you are simultaneously most free to exercise your brilliance. Your niche market is the place in which you have a natural competitive advantage because you occupy the right place in the right ecosystem. A good niche market is one in which: — You are highly visible and easily accessible to the people who are most likely to benefit from your work, including prospective clients and customers, prospective collaborators and partners, and others with whom value-adding activities are most likely to be mutually beneficial. — You can employ the widest range of your talents, skills, and training (your offer.) There’s a paradox in naming your niche market. When you give people a category to put your products or services in, it is easier for them to get a handle on what you do and to remember it. It’s also much easier for them to appreciate how you differ from other professionals in that category. In other words, by putting yourself in a category, you can also make yourself stand out because you distinguish yourself from others in that category.
