Finding it Difficult to Get That First Job? Try Volunteering

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Waller Jamison If you haven’t found a job since graduating or are trying to get back into the job market, the recent gap in your CV or rsum could be holding you back. Or perhaps you simply havent got the experience you need for the post you really want. Feels like Catch 22? You cant get a job because you havent got enough experience and you cant get the experience without a job. One possible way out of this dilemma is volunteering, which will enable you to get both valuable experience and a reference. Whilst it may be difficult to consider working for nothing, there are plenty of advantages and, if necessary, you can take a temporary post to pay the bills and organise your voluntary work to fit around it. There are various ways of approaching volunteering and before accepting a position, you should consider what you want to get from the experience and what you are prepared to put into it. The most obvious place to start looking is in an area which will give particular skills or the experience involved in working in a specific industry. You could offer to volunteer for the company youd like to work for, particularly if this is a charity or non profit organisation. Working as a volunteer can often lead to a job, but dont expect this to happen. If you arent eventually offered a salaried post, youll still gain a great deal of relevant experience and youll have that reference which will help you get work with a similar company. You could consider working in a different field, but one which will still give you skills needed for your ideal job. Remember that soft skills, such as communication skills and teamwork, can be gained in a huge variety of settings. So make a note of the skills you most need to develop and keep these in mind when researching potential volunteer placements. Working with teenagers in a youth club, teaching a sport to disadvantaged or disabled kids or helping out at an old peoples home can all improve those soft skills and can be fitted in to your normal work or study schedule, if you volunteer at weekends or for an evening or two a week. Another alternative is to do something really challenging and radically different from your day to day routine. You could consider a few months abroad helping on a disaster relief or environmental project, or teaching in a poor area in another part of the world. There are plenty of areas in which help is needed and you will gain enormous benefits. If you are a high flyer, this type of experience will prove and enhance many of your leadership qualities, such as risk taking, problem solving, and the ability to work under pressure. If you find yourself in a rut low paying job or no job at all months after graduation - this could be the way to move out of it. What Treatments Other Than Drugs Are Used For Fibromyalgia?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Nathan Wei Recent pharmacologic breakthroughs have helped tremendously in the management of FM. These drugs including selective serotonin uptake inhibitors with and without norepinephrine, GABA stimulators, and others have enabled physicians to provide much needed relief. However, drugs are only one-third of the treatment program. The second leg of the tripod is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The purpose of CBT is to change the patients perceptions of themselves in order to better cope with their disease in a more constructive and positive manner. (The third leg is exercise which will be discussed in another article). CBT is instituted with the following targets: getting the patient to stop viewing themselves as a victim; showing patients how to deal with problems in a more positive manner; teaching patients how to monitor their thoughts, feelings, and emotions; helping patients to rely more on themselves; getting patients to view FM as a manageable problem; and teaching patients how to better problem solve. CBT has been found to be effective not only for FM but for other chronic pain syndromes as well. The major components of CBT are: relaxation, goal setting, problem solving, self-reinforcement, and developing a more positive attitude. A key component of CBT is patient education. Patients learn about the pathophysiology of FM and also learn how to better deal with sleep disturbance, chronic pain, and fatigue. Patients are also taught the key differences between FM and other types of arthritis. Instruction on proper use of complementary (alternative) therapies, nutrition, and exercise round out CBT. It is critical that patients realize that CBT is as important as medication and exercise- all three being the legs of a therapeutic tripod. Communication Tips - How to Get a Man to Open Up and Talk More

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Michael Douglas Men, we know don’t cry. And we also know, they don’t talk much. But the fact is that men are desperate to talk, to speak their hearts out. But usually they shy away from saying what’s on their mind. Follow this guide on how to get your man talking freely to you. Win his confidence Unlike their better halves, most men are afraid of women being critical of them. Men hate being humiliated. So don’t judge him by what he’s saying or make fun of his ideas. Just accept him the way he is and encourage him to talk. Talk about yourself In order to help him talk about himself, reveal a little about yourself - your past, your favourite songs, an embarrassing incident. You’ll help him feel comfortable, and eventually get him talking. Let go of the past Don’t rake up unpleasant memories. If he hurt you the day before yesterday, don’t hold on to it. Men hate lingering on the same topic. If he’d said sorry, simply forget the incident. You don’t want him to clam up. Be a good listener Instead of yapping, give your guy a chance to discuss certain issues or just pour his heart out. Be patient, it can be tiring playing the role of a listener. But it’ll pay in the end. Make him feel special You need to exude a feeling of togetherness. Be around him, buy him his favourite deo or CD, cook a meal for him, go out for a movie - just make him feel special. This is the best way you can get him to open up and talk his heart out. The World of Herbs

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Robbie Darmona Herbs have really become the passion of many devoted gardeners. Why so, you may ask? -Because they are extremely simplistic to take care of. Another big priority that herbs have over other garden plants is that THEY ARE USEFUL. Herbs can be used in your kitchen, for preparing and spicing of different meals. Thats why, many people just become hooked on growing herbs. Not just housewives, though. Herbs are admired amongst professional gardeners as well, as a supplement to the floral variety of a garden. They are a delight to touch, smell and taste. Many people become virtually obsessed with different types of herbs. Herbs have an important role in anyones household. The main part of their participation is played in the kitchen. They are also used for aroma therapy, because their scent is very strong and has also positive effect on the health. One of the biggest markets for herbs is the Farmers Market in Madison. It is really huge! There are many various kinds of herbs, you can find almost everything at an affordable price. The pesto is the most popular amongst visitors. They can offer you free samples of pesto so that you can try it yourself. If you are wondering what pesto is, I should tell you it is an amazing combination of different herbs. It is a condiment made from fresh basil leaves, parmesan cheese, garlic, nuts or walnuts, all mixed up in olive oil. You can use pesto on nearly every meal you cook: on pasta, fish, chicken, bruschetta. Actually pesto is just one of the condiments you can make from basil. The Farmers Market is especially famous with its basil production. This herb can be used in all kinds of cooking, and it gives your meals an incredible taste. OK, what if you decide to grow basil on your own? Herbs are really easy-to-grow, the procedure is very simple. Herbs, almost all kinds of herbs actually, grow on average soil. They admire sunlight, and they do not need regular watering. If you plant them in a sunny area, they will surely thrive. The only thing you need to pre-consider is the soil: dont plant them on too heavy soil (soil full of clay). That is because clay can contain more water then it is actually needed by the herbs. It also stops the process of drainage, which is needed by the herbs. If you are not sure about where to plant them, you can also use containers. Containers are easy to move, so that you can easier find the proper sun-lit place where to put your herbs. Herbs can really thrive in a properly chosen container. The next thing for consideration is where your herb garden should be placed. The easiest answer is: near to the kitchen. Place your herb container as near to your kitchen as possible. Grow your herbs in your own garden, or in the patio. Herbs are best used when they are fresh , and they retain freshness for several hours. So, you must have the fresh bouquet of herbs as soon as you need them in your cooking. The only thing you should do as an effort, is to go outside, walk several meters and pick up the herbs you need. If they are not fresh (which means: if they are cut long time ago), herbs lose their scent and their properties as condiments. The essential everyday herbs that you should first plant in your garden are parsley, chives, orenago. If you cannot plant them in the garden, youd better use containers, which are put close to your kitchen door. Keeping Your Marriage Happy and Healthy for a Lifetime

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Rhetta Akamatsu As a wedding planner and ordained minister, and a happily married woman, I constantly read and think about what keeps a marriage happy and healthy. Here are some of the best tips I know for you: 1. Don’t underestimate the importance of sex. Don’t even think that you always have to be in the mood for sex to have it. Sometimes, establishing that physical bond is more important than sleep, or that great new book, movie, video game, or even baby! How often couples need to have sex is an individual as the couple, but here’s a good rule: Barring illness or absence, never go more than two weeks without having sex together. The closeness and intimacy you create together goes far beyond the bedroom. 2. Never go a day without saying “I love you.” Several times a day is better. Your partner needs to hear it, and you need to say it. Never assume,”Well, he knows,” or “My actions speak louder than words.” Maybe, maybe not. But the words are powerful. Say them. 3. Some experts say that couples need to touch in some way at least 5 minutes a day. Five minutes a day! I think couples need to exchange loving touches at least 15 or 20 minutes a day minimum. Just holding hands walking to a store or restaurant, a quick hug or pat on the back walking by, or a peck on the cheek at an unexpected moment conveys a lot of love and can cover a lot of small misdeeds! 4. Make time to do things together. No matter how busy you are, go out to eat or to a movie, or do some other activity you enjoy at least once a week, just the two of you. This gives you good memories to think about, shakes up your routine so you don’t get in a rut, and gives you something new to talk about besides the bills and the kids if you have them. Following these four rules will give you a good beginning to creating the kind of marriage that will be satisfying and happy throughout your life. They are only a start, but if both of you keep thinking and reading and learning, your marriage will just grow better and better. Negotiate the Cheapest Auto Loan

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jay_Moncliff]Jay Moncliff Rather than luck, getting the best rate on your auto loan is a skill that can be learnt, where knowing how to negotiate is the crucial component to getting the best deal for yourself. The best way to dispel nerves while negotiating is by remembering that you are trying to save yourself money, and without these nerves, you will easily find the courage to drive down the rate they are offering you. The following suggestions will also help you as you go through your uto loan interest rate negotiations. Auto Loan Tip #1 Buy at the End of the Month Frequently the marketing tactics of auto dealerships involve contests, with the winner receiving either a physical or monetary prize and some coverage in the local newspapers. Research indicates that these contests run for a month on average, by the end of which salesmen are desperate for a sale as buyers are waiting to see who wins, rather than purchase. Use this desperation for your own benefit, as the salesman will be more focussed on the sale than the margin it will earn him, and you will be able to drive the overall sale price down. The result of a lower sale price is a lesser amount financed, and this might enable you to negotiate better terms for your auto loan. Auto Loan Tip #2 A Good Credit History While seeming obvious, most people are unaware of the effect a poor credit history has on their auto loan rate. An excellent credit rating gives you the freedom to purchase at your convenience, as lenders will want you as a customer. However if you have a poor credit history, devote several months to trying to repair it and you will find it has wider benefits, in addition to helping you get a better interest rate on your auto loan. Auto Loan Tip #3 Negotiate and shop around When you are buying anything, the benefits of shopping around are clear, and arranging an auto loan is no different. Prior to your negotiations calculate your limits, so that you know the maximum you can afford to put toward an auto loan on a monthly basis. It gives you a reference point for negotiation of rates, and also prevents you tipping your hand and letting the other side know the point at which you will walk away. Always remember, no matter how high the pressure to make the sale, there are thousands of car dealers and lenders, so dont accept any offer of finance without shopping around. Hey, They Don’t Make Them That Big

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Peter Somerville Ran into a lawyer friend the other day. Hadn’t seen Jill for months. She had been packing on the pounds the last time I saw her. Crazy schedule. Client lunches. Client dinners. Late nights at the office. “Who has time to even think about planning a meal.” When you get a little older priorities and schedules change. You don’t find the time for the gym on Saturday morning. Friends move. Tennis a few times a week gets replaced with something less physical. You’re busier than ever, and before you know it a little bigger around the middle than ever too. Jill was looking good when I saw her. I asked her about it. She said her moment came last Winter when she was looking through catalogues for outdoorsy outfits she was going to need for a Spring vacation trip. “They didn’t list the size I needed in the catalogue, so I called them.” The salesperson sounded young. Probably skinny with a bad complexion too. The answer: “Hey, they don’t make them that big” was Jill’s wake-up call. “I couldn’t get my arm through the phone line, so I knew I had to change something.” There are personal trainers. Books. Diets. The information is out there but “I just didn’t have the time for a lifestyle changing course.” Jill said she went with a meal replacement program. “I don’t count calories. I don’t shop the outer aisles, and I don’t cook.” “Everything is delivered and it’s right there when I need it.” Jill’s logic is inescapable. Practical too. A ten year study by George Blackburn, M.D., an expert in nutrition and metabolism at Harvard medical school compared two groups of people in the aptly named town of Pound, Wisconsin. The Harvard team gave one group meal replacements that they stayed on until they reached their desired weight level, and then went back to from time to time to maintain. The comparison group simply “followed the eating habits of their community,” says Dr. Blackburn–which, in Wisconsin, was likely to include lots of cheese and bratwurst. A decade later, the people using meal replacements for weight control had maintained a 7-pound weight loss, on average. Big deal, right? Well, yes, when you consider that their home town counterparts gained 25 pounds, on average, during that same 10-year stretch. Depending on your needs and your budget there are a couple different ways to go with a meal replacement program. You can pick-up meal replacement drinks and shakes at your local grocery store. You buy these liquid meal replacements in six or ten packs and use them to replace one or two regular meals per day. Assuming a normal three meal day, that still leaves at least one regular meal to plan and prepare. The next level, and the one that seems to work the best for most people because it is the easiest, is to go with a professionally prepared replacement meal program. The best part of these programs, Medifast being the most prominent, is that you don’t have to do anything other than take delivery. Their prepared meals include shakes, but you get some solid food too like bars, soups, oatmeal, chili, and puddings. You are not guessing about your nutritional intake either. The pros serve up low-calorie, nutrient-balanced, vitamin fortified meals that are medically supervised and are being used by millions of other people. Professional meal replacement is the way to go if you want to lose weight now without the hassle of calorie counting and aisle shopping. Like Jill, you can worry about the “big” lifestyle changing stuff later. (c) 2006 by You Look Great - What Diet Are You On. A healthy weight loss diet plan blog. Friends, Your Diet Does Affect Your Mental Health

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Foras Aje Depression and its symptoms are mostly in the mind. However, what we should know is the mind is affected by several factors including diet. Thus it will be safe to say one crucial step in depression treatment and control will be-amongst other factors-monitoring ones diet: for physical and mental health. Now friends, I had mentioned and offered praise to Yoga for being an excellent therapeutic choice for depression treatment. Nonetheless, to augment that fact, being a very important limb of Yoga into itself- what you eat also has an effect on your mental health. That considered a crucial step will be to make some dietetic changes for depression treatment amongst other factors. Admittedly, when in depression, most of us have the tendency to binge in an effort to mask our feelings or deaden the pain, some of us go as far as soliciting the use of alcohol, drugs or even sex for depression help. Although they may give some relief for a while, when these mere distractions wear off, the symptoms of depression always do come back, and with a vengeance. Friends, an observance of nature will show us that when animals are frightened or angered, they refrain from eating until after the passage of considerable time. It is true that under stressful circumstances many civilized people refrain from eating and find in truth that they lack the desire for food, but it is also too often that most will eat large meals under these circumstances, which will be mostly disease forming foods to start with, that as a consequence, complicates or altogether halts an already retarded ongoing digestion. This endless cycle leads to even more toxins and poisons in an already encumbered body. Taking this into consideration, it will be sensible to take a break from eating when dealing with depression (as in a fast) at least till your emotional balance returns, which will be the end result as the body is not taxed with the duties of digestion, assimilation and re-building. Ones mind clears and all moroseness disappears and consequently, we tend to find the answers to the problems warranting a treatment for depression in the first place. These steps, be they a fast or a healthier diet, will ensure that the body is cleaner and well we all should know by now that a cleaner body equates to a cleaner mind. So in my opinion, instead of introducing chemical substances into your body in a quest for seeking depression treatment, from the facts above, it will be wise to first make a dietetic change, which again may include a short fast, at least to clear our minds first to tackle our problems, then eat the proper foods for nourishment and of course partake in some physical exercise (my choice being some Yoga) to obtain the inevitable feel-good results. One last thing on the subject of diet and depression treatment, I choose to remind you of this quote: Let your foods be your medicine and your medicine your foods (By Hippocrates the Father or Medicine) May happiness be yours. The Truth About Women Revealed

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Caterina Christakos Have you ever imagined what it would be like to read a woman’s to mind - especially a woman you want to get into your bed? How about just being able to fake it enough that she thinks you can read her mind? Here are some powerful clues that can tell you if she is interested in you and the type of things she might be interested in in bed. 1) Is she biting her lower lip or licking it? She is definitely into you. This is a little signal that she isn’t even aware she is doing. It ranks right up there with playing with her hair and crossing and uncrossing her legs. 2) Does she lean into you when you are talking? You have grabbed her attention. 3) Does she touch you alot? If she is caressing your arm or finding excuses to touch you then you have a huge chance of scoring tonight. 4) Does she love it when you order food for her and make decisions? This might be a sign that she wants you to take charge in the bedroom. If she enjoys having her hands help down by you during sex, she might be into a little light bondage.Start with scarves to test her reaction. 5) Watch her while she eats her dinner. Does she really get into the meal, especially the dessert? Try adding some whipped cream or chocolate syrup to your night play. 6) Want a new way to turn her on? Try renting some erotic videos with a story line. Try the Red Shoe Diaries, Henry and June or Eyes Wide Shut. If she likes the scene in Eyes Wide Shut where they are wearing masks she may be open to experimentation and role play. 7) Want to get her in the mood? Try having a picnic on your living room floor. Include wine or champagne, strawberries, whipped cream and finger foods that you can feed each other. She will find it romantic and you have the privacy she may need to show her appreciation.
